His last race. Sydney Wooderson, 32-year-old solicitor clerk, ran his heart out to win the last and greatest race of his life. Great Britain at the European Athletics Championships held at Oslo, Sweden. After gaining the 5000 meter title, Wooderson collapsed and, as he describes it afterwards, 'blacked out so that I didn't hear a single cheer'. On his recovery, he said 'that was absolutely my final.... I shall retire season'. His record time of 14 minutes 8.6 seconds, has been beaten only once in the history of the athletics, and it was a second speedier then any 5000 m run on this smooth, fast, track.
