Rifleman A. Deakin, Kings Royal rifles, was the first British soldier to fall on Greek soil in the liberation. On his behalf his mother receives the Freedom of Athens - "a small token of the steam and gratitude to the children of Great Britain who gave their lives for the liberation of Greece". At a ceremony at the Town Hall, Jarrow's Mayor, Alderman J. Symonds, presented Mrs S. Deakin with a scroll proclaiming in Greek that she is a "most honorary citizens of Athens". 2 May 1946
