The centuries-old ceremony of Royal Maundy was held at Westminster Abbey where his Majesty the King George VI watched by the Queen and the two princesses distributed Maundy money to 30 aged men and 38 women. The ceremony of Maundy dates from the days when the kings of England, as an act of humidity, washed the feet of poor men and gave them meat, money". Picture shows 87-year-old Samuel Chilvers smiling happily after he received his Maundy purse from the King at Westminster. 18 April 1946
