Nike Guards Niagara's Industrial Area. It's like a scene from a future as space-helmeted and suited ground crew of the American Army refuel a Nike guided missile, one of the weapons guarding the Niagara industrial area against surprise attack. Fuel used is nitric acid and low-grade petrol. The Nike's "world of tomorrow" base is located just southeast of Niagara Falls. Direct warning is received by radar of an approaching enemy plane, the hostile aircraft would be 'held' by target-tracking radar until the Nike is fired. A computer guides Nike on to its target. The guided missile travels at 2.5 times the speed of sound and is capable of intercepting any known type of Russian bomber. Bigger, better and faster guided missiles ares being planned by the US Army. New York, USA. 14 January 1957.
