Dr Adrian Kantrowitz (left) beams as his brother Dr Arthur Kantrowitz displays an "auxiliary heart" at a press conference at Brooklyn's Maimonides Hospital, 22nd of May. The device, properly called a "mechanical auxiliary ventricle" was developed during 15 years study at a cost of about $1 million by the 2 brothers. The device was implanted in the chest of a seriously ill 63-year-old woman on 18 May, during an operation headed up by Dr Adrian Kantrowitz. The patient was reported as doing "quite well." It is the 1st entry with both the operational successful and the patient lived for any significant length of time. 22nd of May 1966
