Japanese Prime Minister Nobusuke Kishi, on right, and Hayato Ikeda, Minister of International Trade and Industry, who was announced elected president of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic party in succession to the Japanese premier. Mr Kishi was stabbed in the leg and seriously wounded shortly after the convention of the party at which Mr Ikeda was chosen to succeed him. He was rushed to hospital where it was said he had lost a considerable amount of blood. 14 July 1960
