In his great Navy Day speech, broadcast early this morning, October 28, President Roosevelt referred to the recent torpedoing of the American destroyer Kearny in terms that might bring the US into the war "America has been attacked" said the president. "The USS Kearny is not just a Navy ship. She belongs to every man, woman and child of this nation. Hitler's torpedo was directed at every American. Whether he lives on our sea coast or in the innermost part of the nation." The president disclosed that the Kearny sustained tremendous damage, and yet was able to reach port under her own power. 11 American sailors were killed by the torpedoing.
