Known as the "Elusive Taku", no British submarine has been hunted more relentlessly - HMS Taku - with a number of "kills" to her credit, has had many exciting adventures and escapes. Early in the war, after the Taku had torpedoed a large supply ship off the Norwegian coast, she was forced to lie for hours on the seabed while hunting craft search for her and a "perfect avalanche of depth charges" rain down. Early in 1943 she had another narrow escape in the Aegean, where, except for half an hour on the surface when the captain could not risk making the noise of running the blowers to clear the air in the submarine, the Taku remained submerged 36 hours. Later she sank by gunfire a ship flying the swastika flag and loaded the German soldiers. During another patrol should bombed an enemy harbour. The Taku's company claims to be the youngest in the submarine branch - the oldest man on board is 31. Photo shows: HM Submarine Taku taking part in anti-shipping campaigns off the coast of Norway.
