31 March 1964 Original Caption: Youths clash at Clacton - the Essex coastal resort of Clacton was turned into something resembling a battlefield by hundreds of gang boys from London who invaded the town over the weekend. The main rival factions were Mods - boys who wear modern clothes and ride scooters - and the Rockers - boys wearing leather clothing and riding powerful motorbikes. The police, who had to be reinforced, made over 120 arrests during the weekend. Extensive damage was caused in cafes, on the pier, in amusement arcades, and at the nearby Butlins holiday camp.
