Remains of an unknown city discovered . While excavating a Byzantine fortress on the Greek island of Chios , John Boardman , sub-director of the British Archaeological School in Athens , has come upon the remains of an ancient city and temple . The ruins , which appear to be 26 centuries old , are unknown and do not correspond with any mentioned by ancient writers . Photo shows - a vase reconstructed from pieces of pottery found in the temple. This is the work of a civilised , modestly wealthy community which disappeared mysteriously during the third century BC 1 September 1953
