Remains of an unknown city discovered . While excavating a Byzantine fortress on the Greek island of Chios , John Boardman , sub-director of the British Archaeological School in Athens , has come upon the remains of an ancient city and temple . The ruins , which appear to be 26 centuries old , are unknown and do not correspond with any mentioned by ancient writers . Photo shows - Part of a marble statuette of a woman found in the temple . This find is particularly important as it is the first specimen of work by the once-famed scultoiors of Chios to come to light . 1 September 1953
