French Canadians in the trenches trying to keep coll through the hot days in France . The hot weather of the past few days has rendered a radical alteration in dress essential for the hard-worked soldier . The French Canadians , being less conventional than others , have solved the problem in the manner indicated in this photo . In this case , the trench in which the view was taken was very scientifically constructed - in addition to the sand-bag ramparts and the corrugated iron shelter , the floor of the trench was kept dry by reason of the wooden pathway down the centre and the excellent siting of the position . 5 August 1916
