Volunteer "guinea pigs" help in battle against common cold. Aiding research into the common cold at Harvard Hospital, Wiltshire. the work began in 1946 and since then over 1500 visits have been paid, about 50/50 between male and female, and they spend 10 days there in an attempt to catch cold to help the researchers. Many do not! They live in pairs in cream and green painted chalets, cut off from the world except for a telephone. Picture shows volunteers Rosemary Carless (left) aged 25 of Chesterfield and Kathleen Schaller, aged 21, of Aveley Essex, as they were given drops (which might or might not consist of infectious material) by a research unit doctor today.
