The First Canadians: A Blackfoot Indian. Proud, reserved and warlike, the Canadian Indians for generations resented the intrusion of the white man. When they were not attacking outlying settlements, they fought inter-tribal conflicts. Up to 1869, Blackfeet and Crees waged relentless war, counted victory by the number of scalps taken. In 1885, some tribes joined in the unsuccessful rebellion led by half-breed Louis Riel.
