Cassius Clay with arms raised, is waived to the neutral corner as Floyd Patterson (kneeling) takes a mandatory count of eight in the 6th round of their title fight in Las Vegas. Clay won on a technical knock-out in the 12th round to retain his title. The referee, Mr Krause, had to warn Clay for talking to Patterson early in the fight. "Clay tried from the first round to humiliate Patterson", Mr Krause said. "He tortured him with remarks like, 'Come on American, come on white American'". After the fight, Clay showered Patterson with unstinting praise and then typically demanded plenty of credit for himself from the "American Public". Clay spent nearly 15 minutes in the ring after the fight delivering a long impassioned oration, before finally heading for his dressing room. 22nd November 1965.
