28 July 1949. Wing Commander Kenneth Gatward pictured receiving the tricolour from Mme Luc at Broomfield Park, Southgate, London. In 1942, Wing Commander Gatward, DSO, DFC, flew a Beaufighter just above the roofs of Paris, then occupied by the Germans, and dropped a French tricolour on the Arc de Triomphe. Mme Luc, who witnessed the flight, presented the tricolour on behalf of the French Government, together with a model of the plane used on the mission.
