Eamon De Valera September 8th 1946 A new portrait of Eamon De Valera, President of the Executive of the Irish Free State 1919-1922 and 1932-1937, now Taoiseach (Prime Minister) of Eire. Born in New York City 64 years ago, he is the son of a Spanish artist and an Irishman, Catherino Coll of Co. Limerick. He was educated at Christian Brothers School and Black College, National University of Ireland (of which he is Chancellor). Sentenced to death for his part in the 1916 uprising, he was pardoned under Amnesty, but re-imprisioned till his escape from Lincoln Gaol in 1919. He was president of the Sinn Fein from 1917 to 1926, when Fianna Fail was founded and presided at the Assembly of the League of Nations in 1938.
