Three people were killed and many injured when National Guardsmen opened fire on a mob which rushed the courthouse at Shelbeyville Tennessee USA trying to capture and lynch E K Harris a 22 year old Negro who was on trial on a charge of attacking a 14 year old white girl - the mobs were repulsed from one attack by tear gas but when Guardsmen retreated to the courthouse attempts were made to dynamite the building - the Negro was eventually smuggled away disguised as a National Guardsmen by the Deputy Sheriff - the infuriated mob later set fire to the courthouse - photo shows E K Harris the accused Negro with National Guardsmen in the courthouse Tennassee shortly before he was rushed to safety December 28th 1934
