After 50 earthquakes in 24 hours and with the earth still trembling beneath them the inhabitants of the Marmora Islands ( in the sea of Marmora ) and the Erdek Peninsula are desperately petitioning to be evacuated - already the death roll is more than 40 and hundreds have been injured - relief parties which hurried to the devastated region which is about 70 miles from Istanbul have found thousands of starving and homeless people wandering in the streets of the wrecked villages and 400 tents have been erected as temporary accommodation - dysentery has broken out and the terrible sufferings of the population are being increased by violent storms and intense cold - photo shows a relief party worker visiting one of the temporary shelters erected for the thousands of homeless after the quakes January 20th 1935
