No town of wartime France could have offered a spectacle of greater devastation and ruin than Oviedo ( the capital of the Spanish province of Asturias ) does at the present time - the town has just been recaptured by loyal troops after it had been in the hands of rebels for weeks and there is scarcely one building which has not been reduced to dust and debris - whole streets of houses have been destroyed by the gunfire while others have been partly demolished to provide barricades for the insurgents - most of the public buildings have been shattered and the starving and homeless population search dolefully among the ruins in the hope of finding something that they can use for food and shelter - photo shows all that is left of a new school building in ruined Oviedo October 25th 1934
