A message was received from the SS Hull Trader by the Southend lifeboat saying that the steamer had in tow a motor boat with three people aboard which she had picked up about 15 miles out at sea - it appears that a Mr Netherington and a Miss G Howe of Catford had dcided to go fishing so with the engineer Mr Gavinson of Queensborough they set off in Mr Nethrington's boat - on returning the motor gave out near the Mass Lightship and the party drifted out to sea - it was then dark - the SS Hull Trader saw their plight and took them in tow with a stiff wind blowing at the time - they were then transferred to the lifeboat - photo shows the three adventurers with hot drinks after their return - left to right are Miss G Howe with Mr Netherington and Mr Gavinson October 22nd 1934
