Russian expedition - first pictures to reach England of the Soviet Chelyuskin expedition stranded in the ice wastes of Arctic Siberia after their ship had been crushed by ice and had sunk - the members of the expedition left the doomed vessel and took refuge on an ice floe - the women and children were afterwards rescued by the airman Liapidevski who took them off by aeroplane - photo shows members of the crew of of the Chelyuskin preparing the camp on the ice for the expedition March 24th 1934
