The Elgin Marbles, sculptured stones carved 23 centuries ago and forming part of the frieze of the famous Greek Parthenon in Athens, are being brought from their war-time home in a London Underground Railway tunnel, back to the British Museum in London, where, after they have be washed, they will be on general view to the public in six months'time. The picture shows the famous slab of the East Frieze, featuring the Goddess Athena.8 November 1999, new row breaks out as it is revealed that the Duveen room with the Marbles in it can be hired for 35000 pounds.
