Jeanne Avril Dansante by Toulouse-Lautrec in the Louvre, Paris Jane Avril was born Jeanne Richepin, the daughter of a high-society prostitute, and was subjected to such severe abuse as a child that she ended up in a mental hospital. While convalescing, she was taken to a ball by her doctor and revealed her talent - a convulsive, ecstatic style of dancing. After performing as a circus bareback rider, she was hired in 1889 by the newest, grandest dance hall in Montmartre: the Moulin Rouge.
