Police stand guard on the steps of the Pretoria Supreme Court when Nelson Mandela, leader of the banned African National Congress and seven of his supporters were sentenced to life imprisonment. Mandela, South Africa's "Black Pimpernel", and the seven men were found guilty on counts under the Sabotage Act, the Supression of Communism Act and the General Law Amendment Act. A ninth man was acquitted and discharged but was re-arrested immediately he was released. 13th June 1964
