Dover, Kent: Britain's Hovercraft, The SR-N 1 flying saucer, lies on the shingle at Dover this morning after making history by flying across the Channel from Calais. The Hovercraft flew across the Channel on a ten inch cushion of air in two hours and three minuetes. Piloting the craft was Test pilot, Lieut Commander Peter Lamb, and on board with him for the trip was inventor, Mr Christopher Cockerell, and flight observer John Chaplin They crawled about the open deck as moveable ballast during the 21 mile flight. 25 July 1959
