Mr Eisaku Sato 63 beams broadly as he is pictured here after being chosen as the new Japanese Premier in succession to Hayato Ikeda. Mr Sato former Minister of Finance was chosen after a bedside conference in Mr Ikedas hospital room after leaders of the Liberal Democratic ( Government) party had been unable to decide which of the three leading contenders for the post should be selected. Mr Ikeda has been in hospital for 2 months with a throat tumor. He decided to resign the Premiership after doctors had told him that treatment would be prolonged November 9th 1964
