Sir Benjamin Hallowell-Carew (Captain Hallowell) 1760-1813 Born in Canada. Entered the Navy at an early age and was appointed by Sir Samuel Hood acting - lieutenant of the Alcide in 1781: served as volunteer at Bastia, Calvi & c. He was present in the Battle of St Vincent, and command the Swifftsure (74) of Cadiz and in the Battle of the Nile. Captured by the French in 1801 he was specially released. Served under Sir S Hood in the Leeward Islands, and in the Tigre took part in the chase of Villeneneuve, 1805 on Irish Coast 1816-18 and at the Nore 1821-24, vice admiral 1819. Succeeded to estates of the Carews of Beddington 1828. Admiral 1830. G.C.B 1831
