Served in the West Indies and at the reduction of Guadaloupe 1756; was at the siege of Belleisle in 1761, and in operations against the French seaports. Knighted 1772, commodore 1775, rear-admiral and commander-in-chief of the jamaica station in 1777. Vice-admiral 1779, baronet 1782, admiral 1787, admiral of the fleet 1799. Followed Nelson's body to the the grave as chief mourner, 1800.
