Samuel, Viscount Hood, 1724-1816 The son of the clergyman on Doretshire. Entered the Navy at fourteen and became captain at thirty-two. he distinguished himself in many actions with the French; was created a baronet in 1778 and rear-admiral 1780. he was second in command in Rodney's great victory over De Grasse in 1782, and was raised to the Irish peerage for his services. Commander-in-chief in the Mediterreanean 1793, when he took Toulan and reduced Corsica. Admiral 1794, viscount 1796. As Governor of Greenwich Hospital he recieved Nelson's body there in 1805.
