The second British atomic weapon to be exploded was successfully detonated on the secret range at Woomera, South Australia, under the direction of Sir William Penney. It was the first atomic weapon to be exploded on the Australian mainland. A charred circle with a radius of 700 yards was afterwards seen from the air around the site of the 200ft steel tower on which the weapon had been placed.
