In theatrical clothes of the Elizabethan period, veteran Shakespearean actor FRANCIS STANISLOV is outlined against the sky as he orates lines from Shakespeare's famed works from the topmost parapet - 80 feet above the ground - overlooking the facade of the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in Battersea, London. The theatre, opened in 1901, and the last one in London to bear the Bard's name, is being demolished. In its place a new block of municipal offices will be built for the Battersea Borough Council. Demonstrating his great love for this theatre and the playwright, Stanislov staged his daring feat as a last tribute to the building. He was cheered heartily by a crowd who watched from below. - 7th January 1958. 固opFoto
