Stoll Theatre doorman Jimmy Matthews puts up the chalked notice outside the theatre, in London's Kingsway, saying that the Negro opera PORGY AND BESS by George Gershwin will definitely open for the London run, thus defying the British Musicians' Union ban on Mr. Alexander Smallens, the American conductor. The union said that unless an English conductor takes over then they will not let their men play. Mr. Blevins Davis, the American producer of the show is determined to play his season, but he would be in a difficult position if the union withdrew the orchestra. The Musicians' Union relaxed their ban to allow Mr. Smallens to take charge of the 34-strong British orchestra until Saturday. After that, they say, the baton must go to a British conductor - 7th October 1952. 固opFoto
