New Malden, Surrey: Driving ace John Cobb (right) and motor engineer Reid Railton study the business end of the jet propelled speedboat Crusader , in which he is to attempt a new Water speed record on Loch Ness, Scotland. The new craft, designed by Mr Railton, is powered by a de Havilland 3,000 horsepower Ghost Jet engine similar to the type used in the Comet jet airliner. It cost ?5,000. John Cobb, aged 52, holds the land speed record of 394.4 miles an hour, and hopes to beat the water speed record of over 160 miles an hour held by the American Stanley Sayre. 22 August 1952
