Jean Mounet-Sully (February 28, 1841 - 1916), brother of (Jean) Paul Mounet, French actor, was born at Bergerac. His birth name was Jean-Sully Mounet: "Mounet-Sully" (without the "Jean") was a stage name. Entered the Conservatoire at 21 and took first prize for tragedy. In 1868 he made his d嶵ut at the Od廩n. His career was interrupted by the Franco-Prussian War and his liking for soldiering almost decided him to give up the stage, when he was offered the opportunity of playing the part of Oreste in Racine's Andromaque at the Com嶮ie Fran蓷ise in 1872. Became one of the mainstays of the Com嶮ie Fran蓷ise. Perhaps his most famous impersonation was that of Oedipus in L'Oedipe roi, first performed in the old Roman amphitheatre at Orange in 1888. He was created chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 1889. He also wrote a play, La Buveuse de l'armes and, in 1906, La Vieillesse de Don Juan in verse. ?007 TopFoto
