Hungarian army units in occupation of Ruthenia in 1938 entering Chust, the capital. A border local war during 1937-38 between Hungary and Czechoslovakia who disputed Hungary's right to territory - in 1983 former Ruthenia part of Soviet Russia - photograph taken in 1938 in an area bordering Poland and the Ukraine, known as Ruthenia. The people were Jewish or the indigenous Greek-Orthodox Ruthenes. They had a measure of autonomy under the Czechs between 1918 and 1938 but saw that disappear when the nazi-aligned Hungarians took over the region during World War II. After the war, half of the territory was ceded to Soviet-controlled Ukraine and the other half remained in Slovakia. 固opFoto
