Ruthenian peasant women - photograph taken in 1938-39 in an area bordering Poland and the Ukraine, known as Ruthenia. The people were Jewish or the indigenous Greek-Orthodox Ruthenes. They had a measure of autonomy under the Czechs between 1918 and 1938 but saw that disappear when the nazi-aligned Hungarians took over the region during World War II. After the war, half of the territory was ceded to Soviet-controlled Ukraine and the other half remained in Slovakia. 固opFoto
