H M the Queen inaugurated the new 'dial-anywhere' telephone service for trunk calls - when she made a call from Bristol - to Edinburgh. The call cost one shilling and ten pence - and was the forerunner of the system by which Britain will get trunk calls (up to 300 miles) by automation. The Queen smilingly dials the number - to make the first trunk call - automatically - at Bristol Telephone Exchange. 5th December 1958 Left is Postmaster General Ernest Marples
