St Nazaire commando raids in 1942 Able Seaman William Alfred Savage, VC who was killed in action, is one of the three Naval heroes awarded the VC for their part inthe raid on St Nazaire. Seaman Savage was a pom-pom gunlayer in a motor gun boat. Completely exposed, he fired continuously into the enemy positions ashore, and at attacking ships, until he was killed at his gun.
