Crowds block Cannon Street, Middlesborough, centre of the town's black quarter following the recent racial riots in the city. During the riots. police , with drawn batons charged and broke up a hostile mob. Seven policemen were injured with flying stones. During the outbreaks, cafes and houses owned or occupied by black people were stoned. The trouble sparked off following the death of an 18-year-old Middlesborough youth. An Arab was charged with his murder. 23rd August 1961
