Southampton Hampton: From the land of golden sunshine to Britain - the land of "Golden Opportunity" - and this is hew West Indian immigrants queued to leave the Italian liner "Ascania" ((,536 ton) when it docked at Southampton this morning. Aboard were the largest number of immigrants to reach Britain from the West Indies who make it only a week before the Commonwealth immigration Act comes in force. Of Ascania's total of 1,369 passsengers more that 1,100 were immigrants. There were 134 children some of whom are shown here . one youngest reluctant to relinquish his Island training carrier a basket on his head and resembles a "come to the West Indies" travel poster whilst behind him, another little fellow, two finger inserted in his chubby mouth and a tiny hand giving a hitch to his falling trousers, wonders what his new country will hold in store for him. 24 June 1962
