Britain is to test atomic weapons at Woomera - It has been officially announced that this year Britain is to test out an atomic weapon on a site in Australia, and it is most likely that the great rocket range at Woomera, 350 miles north of Adelaide, will be the selected spot. Here a ?0m town has sprung up in the arid desert and the whole area has become one of the most closely guarded spots in the world. More than 3,000 people - scientists and others connected with the work - are now living there, and this total includes some 250 women. This is one of a series of pictures taken at Woomera to show the life there. It shows (right) Mrs E J Verral, wife of the acting headmaster, taking an infant class by day, and teaches dressmaking several afternoons and nights a week. Life at Woomera is almost like any suburban town, except that it is on the edge of the rocket range and amid the Australian desert. 20th February 1952
