Coniston Water, England: British speed ace Donald Campbell died today when his speedboat "Bluebird" somersaulted at more than 300 miles per hour during an attempt to beat his own record of 276 miles per hour. This picture shows "Bluebird" beginning the leap before the somersault. The boat was said to have leaped 60ft in the air, and Campbell was believed to have been killed instantly. 4th January 1967
