With scarcely a wobble, a hundred and sixty maids of honour dressed in traditional long white dresses made the ritual mass curtsey to Queen Charlotte's birthday cake last night. The London season was officially underway but this year, the 223rd anniversary of Queen Charlotte's birthday, saw fewer debs than ever before. Only 900 or so of the five guinea tickets were issued for the ball at Grosvenor House. Normally well over a 1,000 are sold.
