Probably the finest existing copy of the Book of the Dead is the papyrus made for Ani, a royal scribe who lived in Thebes in about 1320 bc. In this illustration, of his funeral precession, mourners are shown following the boat-shaped hearse on which is mummified body is lying: British Museum.
