Dag Died Here: Ndola, Northern Rhodesia - Rescue workers scavenge their way amongst the still smouldering wreckage of the airliner which crashed in the African bush, eight miles from here on 18th September 1961, killing United Nations Secretary-General, Dag Hammarskjold, and thirteen other persons aboard. The only survivor was a U.N. guard, American Sergeant Harold Julian, who is now in hospital with severe burns and other injuries. Mr Hammarskjold, who had taken off in the plane from Leopoldville on Sunday afternoon, was on his way to Ndola for peace talks with Katanga President Moise Tshombe.
