Famous aeroplanes pilots and airports Miss Amelia Earhart (Mrs Putnam) Was the first woman to fly the Atlantic - from Newfoundland to Wales in 1928, and some years later made a solo crossing. Has made many long distance flights in America including a flight from Honolulu to Oakland, California in January 1935, and later in that year made a record non-stop flight of 2,100 miles from Mexico City to New York in 14 hours 18 minutes. In 1937, started a round the world flight but her machine was damaged while taking off after flying from California to Honolulu.
