WILLIAM WORDSWORTH From the original at the National Portrait Gallery - Painting by B R Haydon This original signature can be seen at the British Museum, London, on a letter to C Poole asking his opinion on one of his poems. Poet. Born at Cockermouth, Cumberland, 1770. Educated at Hawkshead Grammar School and at Cambridge. In 1791 his sympathies with the revolution led to his taking up residence in France, but later he took opposite views. He settled at Grassmere, 1799, and married Mary Hutchinson, 1802. In 1813 he went to live at Rydal Mount, where he spent the rest of his days. He was appointed Poet laureat 1843. His best known poems include his "Ode to Duty", "The Excursion", "The Prelude", and "Lyrical Ballards", written in conjunction with Coleridge. Died April 23rd 1850.
