SIR JOHN FRANKLIN Born at Spilsbury, Lincolnshire, 1786. Joined the Navy in 1800, and in the following year took part in the bombardment of Copenhagen. Soon fter this Franklin joined the "Investigaor" under Capt. Folinders and gained his first experience of exploration in Australian waters. He was Lieut-Governor of Tasmania, 1834-43. In 1845 he led an expedition to discover the North-West Passage. The expedition met with disaster and all perished amid the ice. Franklin himself died on 11th June, 1847.
