THE CHAOURCE TREASURE France is particularly rich in Roman remains. The arenas at the Arles and Niemes, and the theatre at Orange, being particularly fine architectural examples. The country also has its share of buried Roman treasure, and we show three objects from the Chaource treasure of silver plate found in a field near Mont Cornet in the Department of Ainse in 1883. Dating from the 2nd cent. AD, it had probably been buried during the reign of Gallienus, Emperor of Rome from AD260 to 268. On the left is a silver statuette, on the right a silver sitular, or urn, while between them is a large silver salver. All three articles are now in the British Museum.
